  1. Exploring Norfolk Bucket List

We’ve compiled a list of our favourite things to do in glorious Norfolk! First up are 3 different, but equally special trips…

    Burnham Overy Staithe

Head over to Burnham Overy Staithe to enjoy a peaceful and secluded beach walk away from the hustle and bustle of the busier coastal areas. Park in Burnham Overy (if you use the beach car park be sure to check the high tide times!), and head out on the coastal path past the boats, salt marshes, wild animals and into the peaceful sand dunes.

It is around a mile walk to the beach and a gentle stroll will take around 25 minutes with plenty to see along the way. Once you are on the beach, the golden sand spans as far as the eye can see and you can walk for miles should you wish.

Enjoy a bite to eat at The Hero in Burnham Overy, or pop along the coast to The Victoria at Holkham or The White Horse at Brancaster, both a short distance away.

    The Broads National Park

There is so much to do on and around The Broads and our tip top are:

    – Hire a boat and meander towards horning to see some incredible characterful houses including traditional thatched properties in Wroxham and horning whilst passing a few miniature broads, incredible selection of wildlife and you might even see the spectacular sail boats through horning.

    – Visit The Canoe Man and hire a canoe, kayak or stand up paddleboard to see the waterways from a new angle. They have locations in Wroxham and Coltishall, with the later providing a lovely route from Coltishall down to Horstead Mill through the incredible water gardens. You can also stop at Colisthall common to relax in the sunshine or have a bite to eat or drink at the Rising Sun.

    Watch the sunset at Cromer

Throughout the summer months Cromer is an incredible location to while away an evening. Enjoy some delicious fish and chips from either No.1 or Mary Jane’s and treat yourself to an ice cream for dessert. Walk along the promenade, down the pier and end up on the grass clifftop carpark to watch the sun dip down below the horizon. It’s pretty spectacular.

At an awards ceremony held at London’s Olympia at the start of February Anton was recognised for his hard work and passion in driving the industry forward. Although Anton did not walk away as the winner he was immensely proud and felt privileged to have been shortlisted for such an accolade.

Having been landlord for over 35 years – he is one of the longest standing landlords in Norfolk, East Anglia and even further afield! Anton is still actively involved in the business on a daily basis, ensuring the standards are continually met and upheld to keep The Kings Head moving in the current direction.

Anton is also a founding member of The Norwich Inns Group. As one of the first buying groups in the country, Norwich Inns pubs are ‘the sign of excellence’ providing a network of over 50 pubs that put customer service and excellence at the top of their agenda. Anton arranges many events throughout the calendar year to enable publicans, breweries and suppliers to network and create exciting plans and ideas for the future. As always there is a charitable spin on all of these events to ensure that a local charity can benefit from the gatherings of so many great suppliers. Having fundraised over £100,000 for different charities through Norwich Inns, The Kings Head & Superhero Events we are proud of what Anton has achieved.

Anton also supports many local businesses through his use of VIP (Very Important Producers) who are all from East Anglia. This is comprised of lots of breweries, vodka & gin producers, catering suppliers and more, their produce is seasonally rotated through the pub and restaurant to ensure that customers can taste the finest produce that local companies can provide and can follow and shape trends in the industry.

From changing guest beers, spirits, to daily specials and 6 weekly menu changes, customers continue to return as they know that every visit will be slightly different. With new inventive ideas and old classics, The Kings Head is a regular haunt for many. That combined with a cosy and comfortable setting, and knowledgeable and long standing staff ensure that there is always a friendly and well known face to welcome people back time and time again.

Having owned and worked in the pub from a young age, Anton ensures that every customer feels welcome and thanks them all for supporting his business.

  5. Time to see what has changed…

This January we closed our little pub for a touch of TLC and after 4 very busy and productive days we reopened. A lot went on behind the scenes with a full and fresh coat of paint front of house and in our stock rooms, cellar etc. Some new furniture also appeared in our bar with the addition of two lovely new sofas and curtains. With the most challenging piece of work being our bar, we sanded down (over the course of 8 hours!) the tops to reveal the natural wood underneath, added on some extra shelves and we are in love with the lighter brighter bar.

Pop in to see the changes soon, we hope you like it as much as we do!

  7. Pub owner Anton dons his marigolds and becomes pot washer to raise funds for two local charities!

The Kings Head at Bawburgh has raised £700 for two fantastic local charities through their ‘Back to Front’ night, choosing to support The Benjamin Foundation and Harry Vs Neuroblastoma. During the special event owner Anton Wimmer donned his marigolds and took charge of pot washing for the evening. The kitchen team including head chef Max Emmerson took over the restaurant floor and manned the pumps of the bar, whilst the front of house team took to their kitchen stations (instructed by fellow head chef Jake Armes).

The evening raised £350 for each charity and the money will have important impacts in the local community. The Benjamin foundation deliver a range of services across Norfolk and Suffolk including working to prevent youth homelessness, helping families to build stronger relationships, offering emotional wellbeing support and providing positive activities for young people with limited opportunities in life.

Whilst Harry Vs Neuroblastoma is all about helping an amazing little boy who has been diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma. Harry is nearing the end of his frontline treatment everyone is hopeful that he will be in remission when he has his next scans in April. However neuroblastoma is a particularly aggressive childhood cancer and Harry’s parents Carly and Ali are attempting to raise £239,000 by the end of April to access a vaccine in New York that’s showing promising signs in reducing the chances of relapse.

The money raised will go towards helping these fantastic causes and the team at The Kings Head were delighted to raise £700 to assist them. The highly commended Kings Head in Bawburgh wanted to reverse the usual roles their staff played in order to give everyone an idea of how their role assisted and impacted others in the tight nit team. With a donation being made for each diner from owners Anton and Tet Wimmer, a fantastic raffle full of prizes from local suppliers and supporters, as well as staff members donating their tips for the evening, the fantastic total was raised.

Owner Anton Wimmer was delighted with the amount raised “It was a fantastic evening of great fun and role reversal for the staff here at The Kings Head, it’s really boosted an already bustling team spirit and on top of that, we’ve managed to raise a great amount of money for two local charities – what a wonderful way to spend a Monday evening. Thank you to everyone that supported us during the fun filled Back To Front night!”

The Kings Head Bawburgh would like to thank everyone who visited us during the ‘Back to Front’ night or purchased raffle tickets in the run up and all those who donated to such worthy causes.

The Kings Head at Bawburgh has raised £694 for a fantastic cause during their ‘chosen by you’ week. Choosing to support Keeping Abreast, the money raised will go towards the great work already underway by the charity who offer patient led support for women who are facing or who have faced mastectomy after the diagnosis of breast cancer or the discovery of a breast cancer gene.

The highly commended Kings Head in Bawburgh wanted to give back to their customers as well as assist a great cause after an award winning year and devised the idea of a ‘chosen by you’ week. Throughout September and October votes were collected for the most popular specials served by the gastropub in 2018, with the favourites forming the specials menu offered from 3rdto the 10thof November. With £1 from each diner being donated by The Kings Head, customers contributing through collection boxes and some staff members giving their tips to the charity – a total of £694 was raised.

Owner Tet Wimmer was delighted with the amount raised “It was an honour to be able to support the great work undertaken by Keeping Abreast through this fundraising event, as well as give back to our wonderful customers during our ‘chosen by you’ week. It was a welcome change to see the restaurant dressed in pink!”

Lisa Becker from Keeping Abreast reflected on the week: “The ‘chosen by you’ week concept was a brilliant way for the Kings Head to celebrate their award winning restaurant and provide a stunning menu of favourite dishes for all to enjoy. We are thrilled to have received their very kind and generous donations during the week and indeed for their ongoing support.”

    The funds raised will help Keeping Abreast to;

    • Continue and expand support groups providing emotional support, information and advice and give women and their families the opportunity to meet with others who have faced a similar path
    • Give women the chance to see results of real life reconstructive surgery in the ‘show and tell’ sessions, which are invaluable as no one else can provide this
    • Offer financial and practical support to women to help prepare for surgery and also in the immediate post-surgery period

The Kings Head Bawburgh would like to thank everyone who visited us during the ‘chosen by you’ week and all those who donated to such a worthy cause.

  9. We have retained… 2 AA rosettes and 4 AA Gold Stars!

We are delighted to announce that we have retained our 2 AA rosettes for culinary excellence in a recent reinspection, as well as our gold standard 4 stars for our luxury accommodation.

The AA Quality Standards are a stringent process that enables customers to rest assured that the establishment they are dining or staying at has met a carefully chosen set of criteria. The AA Hotel Services have been recognising accommodation since 1908 and first introduced the star rating scheme in 1912, recognising and rewarding establishments for the quality and range of their services and facilities. First introduced in 1956, the AA’s Rosette Award scheme was the first UK-wide scheme for assessing the quality of food served by restaurants and hotels.

Owner Anton Wimmer is delighted with the outcome of the inspection “After consistent hard work by the entire team at The Kings Head I am delighted that we have retained our 4 Gold Star Award and 2 AA Rosettes. Our housekeeping team tirelessly keep our rooms and the pub looking fresh and spotless, the front of house team ensure that every guest is treated with the upmost importance and our dedicated kitchen team channel their passion for food into every dish served – the team at The Kings Head deserve the recognition they’ve received”.

Some of the excellent feedback received from the recent inspection included “The guest bedrooms still continue to impress; quirky layouts, which work well to the confines of the building, provide very good levels of comfort throughout” with The Kings Head being commended for their efforts.

The Kings Head is one of the original pioneers of gastropub dining in Norfolk and we centre our menu and philosophy firmly on local markets, produce and seasonal specialities. Having recently been awarded by The Good Pub Guide the title of ‘Norfolk Dining Pub of the Year 2019’ and now, following securing our AA titles for another year, we are excited about the upcoming ‘chosen by you’ week taking place from Saturday 3rd November to Saturday 10th November. With customer votes being collected in house and on facebook for your favourite dishes that have been served in 2018, the most popular dishes will form the menu for entire week. On top of this, £1 from each diner who visits us that week will be donated to our chosen charity of Keeping Abreast.

The Kings Head Bawburgh would like to thank everyone who has dined and stayed with us in the past, and looks forward to seeing many old and new faces for our ‘chosen by you’ week in November to celebrate with us, whilst raising money for a great cause!
