    Meet our Bar Manager, Stuart.

Stu tell us a little more about his role as Bar Manager at The King’s Head, why it’s such a great place to work and his funniest story from his nine years working with us!

Who are you and what do you do at the pub?

My name’s Stuart and my role is bar manager at the King’s Head but I also work in the kitchen when needed!

How long have you worked at the King’s Head?

This is my 9th year at the pub, I used to work at Bawburgh Golf Club managing the weddings and events there and moved over the pub 9 years ago!

What’s the best thing about the King’s Head?

The best thing about the pub in the people, as in the customers, the staff, I just think it’s a lovely place to be and a lovely place to work.

What’s your favourite thing to do in Norfolk?

My favourite things to do in Norfolk are play golf, cycle, walk, go to the beach, go to the Broads. Anything that doesn’t cost money! (haha). There’s just so many outdoor things to do in our county.

What’s your favourite dish that’s been on the menu?

It has to be the Seafood Linguine – it’s always a popular dish with customers and smells great when it’s coming out the kitchen.

Any funny stories from the pub?

My funny story is: My best man, who also used to work here, one time came in after a few drinks, and decided to play hide and seek with his dad whilst carrying his golf clubs on his back. He literally hid around the whole pub with his golf clubs with his dad chasing him to take him home.

  5. Meet the Team – Owner, Anton Wimmer

Following on from his Outstanding Achievement Award, we asked our owner, Anton, more about his time in the hospitality industry, and running the Kings Head.

How long have you been working in the hospitality industry and how did you come to run The King’s Head?
My parents bought The King’s Head in 1983, when I was 12 years old, so I’ve been working in the pub since I was 14 years old! I then left and went to Amsterdam to work in a 5-star hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant which gave me the foundation to work in the industry. I then returned to Norfolk and have run the pub ever since.

What does receiving the award mean to you?
Receiving this accolade is a great honour. It’s made even more special as it’s a personal achievement and recognises the work we’ve been doing in the pub and how we’ve evolved over the years. We’ve always had plans and overcome so many obstacles and it’s fantastic to have been recognised, not just for my work, but that of my family and the team over the past 40 years.

Why do you think the pub is so well loved?
It just caters for so many people. We have a fantastic, eclectic mix of customers, from young professionals, to families and long-timers. I’ve always wanted to create the atmosphere where I think ‘that is where I would want to go and eat and drink’ and I think that resonates with so many people.

Who has been pivotal in helping you along the way?
The staff and the team have been pivotal – they are the heart of the pub and ensure we can provide our customers with the service and food we are proud of. My wife and children have also been by my side through the years, so it remains a family affair!

Any stand out moments in your career or stories to tell?
Creating the rooms was a stand-out moment – we wanted to create an experience that went beyond the food and drink.
Two of our staff have been working for us for over 35 years, which is a testament to the team we have built…
Being awarded 2 Rosettes for our food and winning awards have also been stand-out moments – not just for me but recognition for the team too.

  6. Meet the Team – Gemma: General Manager

We have a fantastic team of dedicated staff working for us at the King’s Head. So we wanted to introduce them to you! Some will be familiar faces, and some work behind the scenes.

In the first of our new Meet the Team series, we introduce Gemma, our fabulous General Manager. We asked her a few questions…

How long have you been working at the King’s Head and what it your role?

I’ve been working at the pub since Feb 2017, so nearly seven years now! I’m the General Manager, which I share with Kandi. We oversee the day-to-day running of the pub and make sure everything is running smoothly.

I originally started part-time, doing two shifts a week on the evening and weekends. I then took voluntary redundancy from my full time job and after a 10 minute phone conversation with our owner, Anton, I was employed full time at the Kings Head. Nine months later I was offered the job as General Manager!

I had a stroke back in March 2023 and needed time off to rehabilitate and recover… Kandi then took on the role as a job share, and she now continues that role with me – it’s a great partnership.

What’s the best thing about working at the pub?

The best thing about working at the pub, and especially in my role is meeting a lot of new people, a lot of who I now class as friends.. from the staff to the customers. There’s always new faces and new people to welcome. We can have some great conversations and really get to know people who visit us.

What’s your favourite thing to do in Norfolk?

I  love going paddleboarding around Norfolk and enjoying the coastal restaurants and many beaches we are blessed with in our county… when he have sun and time off (haha)! I also like to spend time with my fiancé Stu, who also works at the King’s Head and my three boys – I’m their biggest supporter on the side-lines whilst they play football (which is A LOT) so that fills most of my time!

What’s your favourite dish on the menu?

I love that our 48.5 menu changes regularly, so there’s always something new to try. I always enjoy trying the new dishes  and at the moment I especially like our Monkfish dishes and the chicken supreme.

What’s your funniest story from the pub?

The funniest story from the pub was when Kayleigh fell up the step in the bar, luckily she didn’t hurt herself but it was all done in slow motion and you had to be there, but it did make us all laugh, especially when we watched the CCTV back! (Sorry Kayleigh.)

  10. 40 years of history …. part 3

2015 rolled around and proprietor Anton Wimmer finally achieved his dreams for the largest change in The Kings Head history – the addition of 6 luxury bed and breakfast rooms above the pub. The same space that housed the ‘Wattle & Daub’ restaurant became home to ‘Walstan’ the biggest suite available. The Kings Head now proudly holds 4 AA gold stars for their accommodation. Each room was named after a key figure in the history of the Kings Head and Bawburgh – a nod to the history of such a wonderful building and area.

This was our wonderful Walstan room prior and post its renovation…

Following the successful addition of accommodation to The Kings head offering, it was time to expand further. A historic building that previously housed a second pub ‘The Dickens’ or ‘The Villager’ in the village was transformed into two charming and spacious apartments in 2017. This was home to an Indian restaurant too where an elephant paraded down the street as part of the opening ceremony in the 80s. This transformation allowed us to welcome visitors from further afield to explore the wonderful sites Norfolk offers in a home from home environment.

It was relatively plain sailing from then, up until 2020 and the emergence of Covid-19! The longest period the pub had been closed under the Wimmer tenure, seven months over the course of two years were lost. Despite the uncertainty, The Kings Head team remained strong and reopened with a renewed passion and drive. Almost all of the familiar faces you’d become accustomed to over the years were back behind the bar and welcoming everyone back home. The incredibly popular ‘Alfresco Dining Area’ was put into place with the support of the local tourism board and to this day it is still used weekly and often hosts private events, corporate BBQs and of course Kings Head events too!

This brings us up until now…
    – 40 years of The Kings Head
    – 40 years of hard work, adapting, growing and learning
    – 40 years of incredible staff, friendly faces and departed colleagues
    – 40 years we simply wouldn’t change

To celebrate this achievement The Kings Head just hosted their 40th anniversary party over the bank holiday weekend in August. We welcomed over 500 of you through the door, offered an incredible BBQ and live fire cooking too, alongside an amazing raffle supported by hospitality businesses all over Norfolk.

Through this event we were able to raise £2,420 for two incredible charities! It felt a fitting way to celebrate our 40th by helping two wonderful causes.

Thank you for your support over the years – we appreciate it more than you know!
